Join us Sunday, April 2nd for a reading, discussion, and booksigning with Katherine Kemp Velez, author of Sachi: Drawing Pictures on Water. Velez' historical novel is the story of a young Japanese woman who escapes a life of subservience to come to America in 1923. Once here, she faces the challenges of being a wife and mother as an immigrant in her new land. After the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor, Sachi and many women like her are stripped of their husbands, businesses, homes, and most of their possessions, and sent to internment camps for the duration of the war.
How does a woman, raised to be obedient and dutiful, speak out for what is right amidst the fear of violence and imprisonment? How can she lead her family back to freedom and home? As Sachi’s three American sons choose different paths, she struggles with conflicting feelings for both of her countries and between her husband and the man she loves.
